How difficult it is for every non-Mumbai Indians fan to watch Indian Premier League final every year without grief and without raising a question if IPL is indeed fixed?

In the past 8 years, Mumbai Indians has won the IPL title 5 times when the winning probability of every team is 1/8. Of course, this team is the best team on paper but isn’t Twenty-20 format the most unpredictable format of cricket? We know that mostly the best team wins in a test or a fifty over format but the chances are less in a Twenty-20 format in which a single delivery can change the outcome of a game. So why it is that every time Mumbai Indians emerges as victorious?

This year, the path was easy as the Mumbai Indians performed exceptionally well and remained at top throughout the tournament but that is not the case every year. In past, the team has struggled to reach to the top 4 but still ended up winning the tournament coming from nowhere!

We can’t forget the last year’s final, a closed neck to neck game with Chennai Super Kings which CSK lost due to an erroneous third umpire decision that took the wicket of MS Dhoni by a run-out which was not out as per the viewers who saw the replay from the television screen. Many such games have favoured the Mumbai Indians team more often than any other Indian Premier League franchise.

The team Mumbai Indians has so far won 5*200 million (1000 million) as the prize money which is quite less as compared to their investment in this league. The brand value of Mumbai Indians in 2019 was estimated to be of 8090 million which is huge as compared to their return of investment. So, we are hopeful to see more IPL Trophies coming to the Mumbai Indians franchise in future IPL finals otherwise why would a team spend so much when the return of their investment is not worthy enough?

Do you love an IPL team because it has your favourite player in the team? Alternatively, is it because it has your favourite player as captain? Or is it because it has your favourite players as the coach? Do you support an IPL team because it belongs to your city? Or do you support a team because the owner of that team is your inspiration?

There could be so many other reasons for supporting the IPL team of your choice.

The cricket fans generally prefer a team that has strongest international players in their team. Some of them chose their team because of their national cricket team captains. Let us have a look at social media to understand which team has the most number of fans on the internet. This will also give an idea to find out the most popular IPL team.

On Facebook, the two times IPL champion, Kolkata Knight Riders page has the most number of likes with more than 16 million people following the team. The second in the list is Mumbai Indians with more than 12 million likes on Facebook. Though Mumbai Indians have one extra IPL trophy as compared to Kolkata Knight Riders, they are behind KKR regarding popularity on Facebook. One of the reasons behind their popularity might be because of superstar Shah Rukh Khan who is famous globally. The third and fourth teams concerning most numbers of Facebook likes are Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore with more than 11 million and 9 million fans respectively.

The situation is bit twisted when it comes to Twitter. Here, Mumbai Indians has 4.59 million followers and is ahead of Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders who have 3.86 million and 3.72 million followers on this social media platform.

On Instagram, Mumbai Indians is again ahead of all other teams. MI has 1.5 million followers followed by Royal Challengers Bangalore who has 1.4 million followers.

The interesting thing to note here is that Mumbai has an estimated population of 18.41 million people and it is least if compared to any other IPL playing states. Whether it is because of the strong players in the team or because of the most number of IPL trophies or because of the owners that have the most money, this team is certainly the most popular team.

Below is the table depicting the overall impact of IPL teams on different social media platforms.

They retained MS Dhoni as their captain for 2018 IPL season who has been with the team since inception. In Dhoni's captaincy, CSK have won two trophies (2010 and 2011 season) and reached four finals.

Led by David Warner for the past three years, Sunrisers Hyderabad has retained their captain for 2018. Warner has been the star of the team ever since he joined SRH in 2014 and even helped his team to lift the IPL trophy in 2016 season.

Virat Kohli is playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore since the beginning of IPL and as a skipper; he led the team to its first IPL final in 2016 season. An exceptional batsman and captain Kohli is retained as the captain by RCB management for 2018 IPL season.

Gautam Gambhir was associated with Delhi Daredevils till 2010 IPL season, and then he joined Kolkata Knight Riders. He led IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders for seven years, and led them to win two IPL titles, in 2012 and 2014 season. He has been named as the skipper of Delhi Daredevils for the upcoming IPL season.

R Ashwin has been appointed as the captain of Kings XI Punjab IPL 2018 season. Ashwin will be the tenth player to captain KXIP after Glenn Maxwell, Murali Vijay, David Miller and George Bailey among those who have led the side. He played for Chennai Super Kings from 2009 to 2015 and helped the team to win two IPL titles, before spending the 2016 season with Rising Pune Supergiant.

After making a comeback in IPL this year, Rajasthan Royals retained only one player Steve Smith and announced him as the skipper for 2018 IPL season. Steve Smith had been part of the Rajasthan Royals team in 2014 and 2015. He replaced MS Dhoni as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiant last season and scored most runs in his side. Along with the captain, the team coach is equally responsible and crucial for the performance of a cricket team. The coach carves a winning path for the team and is equally involved with the captain in choosing the best eleven players for a match. Let us have a look at the coaches of the IPL 2018 teams and their hold on the teams.

Shane Warne (Rajasthan Royals)

Rajasthan Royals have made a comeback in 2018 IPL after being suspended for couple of years and brought Shane Warne as their mentor. He played four IPL seasons from 2008 to 2011 with team as the captain and coach and he was highly successful throughout his career. His extra ordinary leadership skills helped his unpopular average team to finish the first edition of IPL as the winners.

Ricky Ponting (Delhi Daredevils)

Former Australian captain and three- time World Cup winner is appointed as the head coach of Delhi Daredevils franchise for this IPL season. He replaced Rahul Dravid who stepped down due to BCCI's conflict of interest policy. Ponting has previously coached Mumbai Indians for two seasons out of which they won the title in 2015.

Mahela Jayawardene (Mumbai Indians)

He became the head coach of Mumbai Indians last year and replaced Ricky Ponting. However, Mumbai Indians have multiple coaches in their team for every skill; Lasith Malinga along with Shane Bond as bowling coach, Robin Singh as bowling coach and newly appointed fielding coach James Pemment replacing Jonty Rhodes but the credit also goes to the head coach for winning the title last year.

Stephen Fleming (Chennai Super Kings)

He was a part of Chennai Super Kings in first IPL where the team became the runner up. He became the team coach in 2009 after retiring as a player. Under his leadership, CSK won the IPL title twice, both in 2010 and 2011 along with winning the Champions League T20 in 2010 and 2014. This year, CSK has appointed him as their head after coming back from two-year suspension. Along with Fleming, Michael Hussey is appointed as their batting coach. The equation between Dhoni and Fleming is quite good, as both the captain and coach are known for their cool-headed nature.

Brad Hodge (Kings XI Punjab)

This year, Kings XI Punjab appointed Hodge as their head coach and Virender Sehwag as Director - Cricket Operations and team mentor. From last two seasons, Hodge was previously the head coach of Gujarat Lions. Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad will be their bowling coach.

Jacques Kallis (Kolkata Knight Riders)

He was appointed as the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders before the start of IPL 2016 season. He had been associated with the team after replacing previous head coach Trevor Bayliss. Kallis was also the batting consultant of KKR for 2015 IPL season. Previously, he also played an important role for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012 and made his team win the trophy by scoring 407 runs and taking 15 wickets.

Tom Moody (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

In the first two season of IPL, he coached Kings XI Punjab and joined Sunrisers Hyderabad as the coach in 2013. SRH finished in the top four that season. Under Moody's guidance, SRH won the IPL trophy in 2016 . In 2017, SRH reached to playoffs, but lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in the eliminator. He has also coached Sri Lanka during the 2007 World Cup finals.

Daniel Vettori (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

RCB retained former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori as their head coach, who has been coaching RCB since 2014 IPL season. Along with him, Gary Kirsten has been appointed as the batting coach and Ashish Nehra as the bowling coach. Additionally, they both will also play the role of mentor for the team.

The 18-year-old cricketer made his first-class debut for Rajasthan in 2016-17. Rahul Chahar played only one match and took two wickets in that match. Little did we know about him in 2017 until Rising Pune Super Giants bought him. Before that, Rahul Chahar made his List A debut but took just one wicket in his first match. However, he improved and took eight wickets in six List A games. Playing for RPS, Rahul Chahar bagged two wickets, that too of experienced players Hashim Amla and McCullum that caught people's attention.

The leg break spinner travelled with Indian U-19 team to England in August 2017. In England, he picked ten wickets in just four One-Day matches with best bowling figures of 4/63. In spite of his excellent performance, he wasn't selected to be a part of the U-19 World Cup team.

This year, Rahul Chahar played for Rajasthan in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the domestic T20 league and had shown potential at a young age. He impressed by taking six wickets in four games. The interesting fact is that in spite of having decidedly less domestic experience, he was in demand during the IPL auction 2018. In the auction, both Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals showed their interest in buying the leggie spinner. It was Mumbai Indians team that won the bid and bought Rahul Chahar for a whopping 1.9 crore.

The young spinner would have tremendous opportunity to play alongside big names in this year's IPL. Even the guidance and support of the experienced Mumbai Indians players would help the youngster in growth further in his career. His inspiration is brother Deepak Chahar who is currently a part of Chennai Super Kings and played with him, for Rising Pune Supergiant in 2017 season.
